Where to go and what to see

Let's explore small cities that are easy to reach by the rental car. They are Hamina and Kotka on the St. Petersburg-Helsinki road. It takes around 3,5 hours to reach Hamina. Kotka is close to the coast of the Gulf of Finland. There is no turn left there, so just follow the denouement.

In Hamina, there is a historical center with different fortifications.

Hamina was a fortress city after Peter the Great's troops had captured Vyborg.

In summer, the festival of military bands takes place here once a two years. In Hamina, Empress Catherine II negotiated with the king of the Swedes. Mannerheim, the Major General of the Russian Army and Marshal of Finland, served here. The barracks are still here. Now, there is a schools of the reserve officers of the Finnish army. Nearby, there is a German tank on a pedestal.

The main attraction in Kotka is the Maritime Museum that opened recently. This place is famous for its ultra-modern architecture. In Kotka, there is a monument of Alexander Popov, an inventor. On the island where the antenna was placed, there are rings in the rock. But it's difficult to see this place because this is a private territory.

Also, there is a monument of a sailor's wife. This is a monument to the sailors who died in the two battles near the city.

Alexander III used to spend time with family and fishing in his house here.

In July, Kotka celebrates traditional Sea Days. At that time, it’s better to book a hotel in advance because there are a lot of tourists. Also, it’s better to rent a car without a driver in advance, too. You can stay for a night in Hamina or Helsinki.
