Test drive of Nissan Sentra

08.06.2015
Nissan Sentra arrived in the Russian market last year. Did Russians like it by law?

The main things that make the Nissan Sentra attractive are its appearance and interior. Unlike other models, it's more elegant. In the Russian model, the engine has been also changed.

Nissan updated its lineup rapidly. Only in 2014, the updated Juke, the next generation Pathfinder, Teana and Qashqai were presented in Russia. Recently, the third X-Trail model arrived in the official showrooms.

In the C+ class the Sentra sedan from the Tiida «family» showed the possibilities of Nissan. Also, the Tiida hatchback had a debute. Despite the crisis, more than 4,000 cars were already sold in 6 months. In January, the Nissan Sentra entered the list of the 25 most popular cars on the market. So, why did Russians fall in love with this car?

Firstly, they liked the appearance. Compared to the clumsy and angular Tiida sedan, the Sentra looks better. Also, it boasts off an elegant profile, impressive rear lights and lateral line across the whole body with running LED lights. The chromed radiator grille looks out of place because it's bulky. The Sentra looks similar to the Teana in some way. However, the latter is more premium and expensive.

At the end of 2014, the Nissan Sentra Tekna with the CVT cost 914,000 roubles. Now its price is 1,069,000 roubles. The expensive package includes 17” wheels, tinted rear windows, LED lights.

The basic model, Welcome with MT starts from 858,000 roubles. This model comes with ABS, front airbags, air conditioning, front seat heating, stabilization system, adjustable steering (hight and tilt).

The cars produced last year are cheaper now, so you can get different credit offers and discounts on the recycling program. Moreover, there is an interest-free installment for 3 years if you make at least 50% of the cost.

The cabin also looks good. Only some of the subtleties differentiate it from the American Sentra. The most noticeable change is the steering wheel (like Qashqai and Teana). It's a peaceful atmosphere in the cabin: soft contours of the front panel, discreet instrument panel, soft lights, plastic silvery door inserts, climate control and comfortable leather seats. Everything looks noble due to harmoniously matched textures.

However, there are some disadvantages: outdated navigational maps and a small range of the steering adjustment. Only the driver has automatic windows.

In this spacious car the doors open with a wide angle. Compared to the previous Tiida, the wheelbase is bigger by 93 mm – 2,700 mm. In the class C+, only Peugeot 408, Renault Fluence, Citroen C4 boast off a big distance between the axles. The adjustable armrest is available only in Elegance package.

Despite the small external differences between the American and Russian models, the engine has significantly changed. The model from Izhevsk has the HR16DE instead of the 1.8-litre engine. It's installed in many Nissan models: Note, Qashqai, Juke and others. The cylinder block is made of aluminium alloy. There is distributed injection and timing chain drive. There are no high pressure fuel pumps, turbo-supercharge, sophisticated mechanisms to control the valves. The features are not impressive either: 158Nm, 117bhp. Is it really enough for the 4,625mm sedan?
