Peculiarities of traffic rules in Greece

Peculiarities of traffic rules in Greece

13.02.2015

Generally, roads in Greece are free, apart fr om autobahns, which connect different parts of the country, and bridges and tunnels as well. But the payment for driving on these roads are not very high and the highways are of quite good quality.

There are following speed limits on the roads in Greece:

  • 50 km/h — in towns;
  • 90 km/h — outside towns;
  • 110 km/h — on highways;
  • 130 km/h — on most autobahns.

Speeding penalties:

  • €40 — for exceeding the speed lim it up to 20 km/h;
  • €100 — 21-30 km/h;
  • €350 — more than 30 km/h. You might be disqualified from driving up to 60 days.

Finding a car park can be one of the problems when driving in Greece. There is not enough space for car parks and most of them are marked yellow or blue which means unauthorized cars are not admitted. Moreover, in some places parking has strict time limits — no more than 3 hours. And the most annoying thing is that not only do the traffic police in Greece give a parking ticket, they also remove your number plate. And if you have a few offences (such as failing to comply with traffic lights or overtaking in a wrong place), you might be disqualified from a log book for 20 days.

Drink driving

The level of alcohol 0,5 ppm is permissible. Strict sanctions are imposed when the level of alcohol exceeds 0,8 ppm. In this case you have to pay a fine of €700 and you are disqualified from driving for 3 months. If the level of alcohol in your blood is between 0.5 to 0.8 ppm, you have to pay €200. If you are caught to have 1.1 ppm, then you have to pay a fine of €1200 and you are disqualified from driving for 6 months, in some cases you may end up in a jail for 2 months.If you have been caught drink driving twice, then your fine is €2000, you will be disqualified from driving for 5 years and imprisoned for 6 months. If you have just got your driving licence, you must remember that allowable level of alcohol is 0.2 ppm.

Тем водителям, которые получили права недавно, необходимо помнить, что допустимая норма алкоголя является 0,2 промилле.

How to pay your fine?

Greek police officers cannot accept any money from drivers. When you have a fine ticket, you are obliged to pay within 10 days in a bank.
