Driver’s licence, car rental and traffic

Officially Indonesia recognizes national driver’s licences, but indeed it’s practically impossible to rent a car if you lack an international driving permit. You may also need to show a passport and an air ticket. And of course, have money on you.

Bali is known for the worst roads in the country. Locals don’t seem to pay much attention to traffic rules.

Apparently, speed limits in Indonesia were determined by the quality of roads and extreme driving of local roadhogs:

  • in cities and towns the permissible speed is from 30 to 40 km/h;
  • 70km/h in the outer limit of suburbs and up to 100 km/h on highways

And the main thing is the left-hand traffic. Although, that is no obstacle for experienced tourists, for example, those who have been to Cyprus. The rest would better rent a car with a local driver.

Bali Attractions

Bali is called an island of thousands of temples, but nowadays there are not so many antiquities left. These include the mysterious Elephant cave, where you would enter through the hole looking like a demon's mouth. Inside the cave are hidden ancient ritual ponds. The cave also houses Ganesh statue - one of the Hindu gods (the man with the elephant's head and one tusk). It dates from the 13th century.

The Royal tombs were cut out of the monolithic rock in the 11th century. The oldest building of the island includes ten mausoleums in the form of niches with a height of about 7 meters. A gorge with a mountain river divides the rock into two parts; the sites are located on both sides of the river. It also houses smaller monks’ cells.

Even today, the locals worship volcanoes of the island. Volcanic ash provided incredible soil fertility on the adjacent territories. Hardened lava is used for production of souvenir figurines, as well as a construction material.

The Balinese call a group of volcanoes near Kintamani “three brothers.” In clear weather, their three peaks can be seen from any corner of the island. The cascade of Batur, Abang, and Agung peaks make a unique perspective for an excellent photo. You can hike on these volcanoes and enjoy an unmatched dawn. All you need is a determination to have a sleepless night and warm clothes.

In addition to attractions, Bali is famous for its excellent conditions for water sports. Experienced surfers can choose a place with waves of desired height and size. While the beginners can also find suitable conditions to master their surfing skills.

Diverse marine fauna and wrecks attract divers.

Having enjoyed the island’s attractions, you should return the rental car and get ready for the way back home.
