Cheap car rent to travel in Lapland

06.01.2016
It is quite cheap to rent a car in Moscow: rent a budget car and set out to Lapland.

A frosty fairyland where Gerda set off on a deer, following Kai, is pretty available to travel to by car.

Roads and drivers

We are planning to drive in Finnish and Swedish areas of Lapland. These roads are well prepared for winter driving. People drive carefully in both countries (safe driving is nearly a cult).

Road rules are the same as in Europe. You must have your lower beam switched on. In winter, you must have winter (snow) tires.

Speed limits in Finland:

  • in build-up areas – 50 km/h(in Sweden - 30-60 km/h);
  • outside build-up areas – 70-100 km/h;
  • on highways – 110-120 km/h.

Besides, speed limits in Finland reduce to 20 km/h.

It takes two days to get from Moscow to Helsinki (with an overnight stay at friends' in St Petersburg). The distance between Helsinki and Rovaniemi – 800 km. We are not going to stay in the capital as Santa Claus is waiting for us.

Winter landscapes, which you can only see in Finland, start right after Tampere. Lakes with forests. They are covered with ice and white snow. Everything sparkles in the daytime. Fairly light traffic allows to look around and enjoy the views, changes of landscapes.

We drive on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia near Oulu. And sparkling colours of winter forest and snowy lakes are supplemented by cold Baltic waters.

We drive into Rovaniemi after dark. So we have supper and go to bed.

The village of Santa Claus is located in Santa Park, just outside the city. We are welcomed to have a morning coffee. And after that, we are invited to visit Ranua Wildlife Park, the northernmost zoo. Their inhabitants are not caged; they live in their habitat. The fence is to protect them from wild animals.

Being in Rovaniemi, you must visit Lumimaa Snowland, a snowy and icy entertainment centre. It consists of an icy restaurant, bars and a disco. For the braver ones, you can stay in a hotel with bedding made of deerskin.

We head from Rovaniemi to Lake Inari, the biggest one in Lapland. Even in summer it is partly covered with ice. In winter it is a favourite place for fishermen and skiers. They skate and play hockey on the cleared up surfaces.

Urho Kekkonen National Park is not far. It preserves specimens of fauna. Pretty much is provided for hiking and backpackers. We are keen on seeing Korvatunturi – home for Joulupukki (Finnish Santa Claus). But it was a very "hot" season, and we did not catch him.

Our way goes to Swedish Lapland and through Lemmenjoki National Park. It is a nice place full of barely passable areas, so we drive past and straight to Sweden. We cross it up till Sarek National Park. In the middle of the park is Lake Siljan, formed by a meteorite impact. We would recommend to rent an electric car. Car rent by the day is quite expensive, but interesting as well. Lamp posts can be filling stations, enough "fuel" for the trip.

So we drive this car along mountainous Sarek National Park and nearby Padjelanta National Park. A characteristic feature of this park is flat lands. The beauties of this place are Vastenjávrre and Virihávrre. All specimens of the fauna are preserved in this park.

Unfortunately, we do not have any time for Norwegian part of Lapland. Having changed the cars, we drive back. First, Rovaniemi and then Helsinki. We enjoy driving the car among these landscapes of snow, lakes and forests. We walk around this cosy Helsinki and then drive to St Petersburg. We stop in Tsarskoye Selo for a while and then home.
