Audi 80 Cabriolet – rent and try

04.11.2015
The Audi 80 Cabriolet is a car for casual driving not for racing. The Audi 80 is usually called a "barrel". The car created a furore at its time. This is a car for the day off. It appears on the road in summer when you can enjoy driving "without a roof".

At the end of the 80s, the Audi 80 was not only a benchmark of quality prestige cars in Russia but also a dream of many drivers. It even got its own name “the barrel”.

Not everyone could expect to drive this car. It was almost impossible to buy. Renting the Audi simply didn’t exist at that time. There was only the Audi 80 sedan or estate car because nobody even dreamt about the cabriolet. It belonged to a fantasy. We will consider this car in the following review – "a barrel without a roof".

Design

The appearance of the Audi 80 Cabriolet is very recognizable. The absence of a roof gives a playful character to the car. The rest is a solid example of the German car industry.

The branded 17” wheels give dynamism to the model. The engineers of Audi almost managed to get rid of the "disease" of all the cabriolets. As a rule, all the cars of this type have a very massive stern, but this model looks very harmonious.

Interior

When the Audi 80 arrived in Russia, no one paid any attention to the packages and the set of options. The fact of owning such a prestigious and high-quality German car was enough.

The cabin, as it should be for the Audi, is neat, precise and high quality. It should be noted that the main elements of the cabin haven’t changed for decades. For example, if you rent Audi A6, you will notice that the instrument panel, the ignition switch and some other elements are the almost same in comparison with older models.

The Audi 80 Cabriolet has comfortable updated seats. The elements of natural veneer pleased the buyers.

Driving

The car had almost a top 6-cylinder, 2.6-litre power unit which could output 150bhp. Of course, these figures don't impress anyone today, but it's enough for a confident drive.

The 4-speed transmission is too smooth, but if you aren't afraid to push the pedal, it behaves normally. The Sport mode adds more “life” to the car. You can even accelerate on the second gear up to 140kmph.

Handling is good. It can't be called sharp: it's a strolling car, not a rally car.
