Around Turkey by rented car

Around Turkey by rented car

beach holidays are not our option, we had a plan to travel across the Mediterranean coast. We rented the car for 200 dollars.

It was the middle of March and although it was a few months till the summer, we needed warm weather. And me and my wife decided to treat ourselves — we decided to travel to Kemer on a last-minute deal. Since beach holidays are not our option, we had a plan to travel across the Mediterranean coast.

The route was a little more than 1 000 km. we were planning to visit Olympos, Kas, Fethiye and Ephesus, then Pamukkale, Antalya and back to Kemer.

The journey was going to be easy and full of cultural discoveries.

A journey by car like a way to rediscover the country

The results of this journey were amazing. In order not to keep you in suspense, I will start:

Turkey is a mountainous country. I was interested in going on the Lycian Way. It is a long route, which starts in Fethiye and ends in Antalya. The terrain is very similar to the Crimea. You might even mix them up if it were not for perfect motorways. Even mountains did not prevent the Turks fr om building good roads, which we appreciated when driving along a serpentine road;

Turkey — is not only beaches. Ancient ruins,historical monuments and natural sightseeings — everything gives you lots of pleasure. It is very easy to find these places as there are signs along the road;

You can do with the knowledge of English. With villagers we communicated using gestures. We asked for help only when we needed to find a shop or hotel in the city. We did not have to ask for directions as we met traffic signs quite often;

It is real Europe and countries of the CIS are still very far fr om it. Friendly people, clean streets, an organised system of road navigation — all of these we can only see in our dreams;

Europe showed itself even in prices: 1 litre of petrol costs 2 euros. For the same price you can use public toilets 4 times, eat one and a half of shawarma and drink 2 litres of milk;

You will enjoy travelling by car: the signs are clear, no traffic jams, no pits. But you must be careful with the speed. The speed lim it on motorways is 90 km/h, 50 km/h in the city and fines are too high.

What you should know when travelling by car

Вояж по Турции

The monitoring of information gave us confidence that travelling by car should be pretty comfortable — roads, people, weather, sightseeings. Only prices for hotels daunted. That is why we got a tent, a mat and pots. We included sleeping bags before monitoring. They were useful in guest houses, wh ere we stayed from time to time because blankets were very thin.

We brought tourist navigation as well as car navigation with GPS-maps of Turkey. Pinned key points of our route helped us even with a vector map.

We rented the car for 200 dollars when we arrived to Turkey. This was the cost of the Hyundai Getz 2010 with insurance. The car was equipped with an air conditioner and other electronics. We paid with dollars but for travelling across the country you need to have Turkish liras. We paid 400 liras for petrol (enough for 1 100 km), travelling on motorways (6 liras), and parking in Ephesus, Aphrodisias and Antalya — 22 liras. At petrol stations we paid cash but a couple of times they accepted our credit cards.
