Traveling by rental car around Kola Peninsula which is located in the northwest of the European part of Russia in the Murmansk region. This is washed by the Barents and White seas. While driving, you can explore dense forests, high mountains, and the Russian taiga.

Traveling around the Kola Peninsula is a pretty tough journey, so be ready to experience some off-road. However, you'll get a chance to see the northern lands.

Cheap car rental in Moscow: SUV rent

You'll need a car with good manoeuvrability for a trip like this. It's easy to rent a car in Moscow. You'll have to present:

  • driver's licence and passport;
  • credit card or cash deposit.

Rules, roads, and drivers

Аренда автомобиля в Москве дешево для поездки на Кольский полуостров Russian rules are well known, but local drivers often break them. There are speed limits:

  • in the city – 60kmph;
  • outside the city – 90kmph;
  • on highways – 110kmph.

We left Moscow early to avoid traffic on suburban roads. After spending a night in Chudovo, we left the E95 highway. Then we drove to the Lodeynoye field and turned on the Vytegra. There were forests, swamps, and Lake Onega. In the provincial town, the main attraction was a museum of the B-440 submarine. After visiting it, you can imagine how people could live in such a closed space for a month.

Then we drove to Petrozavodsk along the coast. We washed our rental car, walked on the waterfront of Lake Onega, and drove further. Near Medvezhegorsk, there are pine forests and lakes surrounded by boulders.

In Kondopoga, we visited the wooden Assumption Church and the carillon with bells.

After Medvezhegorsk, we could see northern forests with conifers. Then we drove from Onega to the White Sea area through Arctic Circle.

Near Kandalaksha, we visited a local reserve. This was built to protect eiders. There are plenty of berries in local forests in summer. The landscapes are really impressive. It remained me the greatest Levitan's painting – "Eternal Rest".

Further to the north, there is a tundra. We left the main road, drove to the Apatity and Lovozero. This place is a home for the Sami who do herding and fishing. We were invited to a “kuvaksu” where we tried tea with cloudberry jam. Then we drove to the hills to visit the Seydozero, aka Holy Lake, at the 200-metre altitude. The rocky hills were covered with grass and trees. There was a silence over the slightly rippling lake's surface. The «old Koivu» is a miraculous image on the rock. This is a secret of this lake. You can see the image only if you sail by a boat to the middle of the lake.

We came back to the road through the Apatity and moved to Murmansk. The main square is the Square of five corners. But the main tourist attraction is an observation deck. You can see all the ports of Murmansk and ships, including military ships. Also, we visited the first nuclear-powered "Lenin" icebreaker which is permanently moored to the quay wall. These days, it's a museum.

We drove from the town to the Kola Bay coast. Its west coast is rocky and covered grass and shrubs. Its east coast is covered with swamps.

Then we moved to Teriberki where the "Leviathan" movie was shot by Andrey Zvyagintsev. The town became a dying village – you can see the abandonment everywhere.

We came back to Murmansk and organised a trip to the Fishing peninsula. The road passed through a mountain pass where only SUV can drive. It was a good decision to rent Hyundai for a journey like this! This is the northernmost part of Russia. You can see the Barents Sea from the rocky coast. The contrast of bright sky and pale shades of rocks is especially beautiful.

We finished our journey and turned back. After spending a night in Murmansk, we moved to Petrozavodsk. While driving to the south, we could see how forests gradually became more luxuriant and small trees were replaced with the tall ones. Then we finally drove home.
