Veliky Novgorod
Novgorod was first mentioned in written sources in 859. Founded on a crossroad of several trade routes and on a busy waterway, it was strategically important. The unification with Kiev was the beginning of Greater Russia.

The Novgorod Kremlin (also known as Detinets) has been the main landmark of the city for more than two thousand years. So is the oldest stone church of our country, the Cathedral of Saint Sophia. Veliky Novgorod also has a few churches and cathedrals that were constructed later and all of them are worth visiting. The Savior Church kept the frescoes by the famous Theophanus the Greek.

Veliky Novgorod managed to avoid enslavement by the Golden Horde whose armies were intimidated by the city fortifications and its defenders. This is why the earth of Novgorod gave so many archaeological findings. Many treasures are exhibited in the Museum of History and Arts of Veliky Novgorod. Architecture and painting, written sources (from birch barks to hand-written books and documents), pieces of jewelery and applied arts – this isn't the whole list of types of art. A detailed list of museum pieces would take many volumes.
After having explored everything mentioned and the surrounding area (Lake Ilmen and the Volkhov River) and after having seen the majestic monument to the Millennium of Russia, you can head to Pskov, as planned. This old town was an outpost against all the invaders encroaching on Russian territory.
The first object to see is the Pskov Kremlin, then the ancient cathedrals and churches of the city. All these constructions are works of the local school of architecture. You should also go to the town of Pechory to see the Pskov-Caves Monastery. From here, you can begin your way home to Moscow where you decided to rent a car.
