Car hire at the airport of Prague

Car hire at the airport of Prague

23.12.2015
It is always a nice place to visit. Driving around this country is just a pleasure.

Even if you have already been to the Czech republic, you still should see what the life is like there. People work hard, it is a nice place to relax in the evenings and walk in the streets.

It is always a nice place to visit. Driving around this country is just a pleasure.

Car hire

When we landed, we went through passport control and headed to the signs of car hire companies. As we had booked a car online in advance, they only checked our driving licence and passport, money on our credit card. We examined the car, got the keys and documents and left. In the Czech republic, it is cheap to hire a car.

Road regulations and roads

Road rules are the same here as in Europe and they are not difficult to follow. But be aware of speed limitations:

  • in build-up areas – 50 km/h;
  • outside build-up areas you can speed up to 90 km/h;
  • on motorways – 120 km/h.

When you enter rural areas, you can see posts with the speed allowed to remind you about speed limits.

What is more, they are quite friendly on the road. They are not in a rush, they do not cut in front – the result is you are unlikely to see scratched cars.

From the airport we drove straight to Turnov. This is a centre for gemstone polishing.

There was Mladá Boleslav on the way there. The Skoda plants and a museum are located here. Skoda is a Czech brand of cars, they are quite good. They are usually plain and in a simple style. A right car to travel.

There is a royal castle founded in the 10th century. Emperor Rudolph gave it a royal status. At present time it is Public Record Office.

When we got to Turnov, first thing we took an interest in was gemstone craftsmanship. Local garnet holds particularly rich red colour and it can be a perfect thing in skilful hands to create a real piece of art.

Turnov is in the heart of the Bohemian Paradise. There is Rock town – a group of rocks of different shapes.The castle Hruba Skala stands on the sandstone rock nearer to Turnov. There is an observation deck and a hotel.

From Turnov we also travelled to Jablonec nad Nisou. It is famous for its jewellery production. Shop windows of Prague are full of jewellery. This fact actually attracted our interest. But we made a mistake. There is a factory, but there aren't any products in the town. So it was of no interest for us.

We were really disappointed and left for Karlovy Vary. Stunning views of the Laba, flowing in the mountains and a bridge over it.

The way goes along the valley and you could see castles on the hills.

Closer to Karlovy Vary we drove in the mountains again. But the road is so good that you can easily speed up to 90 km/h. And even to look around this beautiful place.

Everything here is connected with spa. You definitely should try local water, walk along the Teplá River and drive past the monument to Beethoven onto the observation point.

Then, we followed the route to the town of České Budějovice, mentioned by Švejk (Jaroslav Hašek).

After driving in the mountains, we drove into the flat land, to Pilsen. The main square features fountains, from which beer flows during beer festivals. There is a castle, Chateau Zbiroh up on the jasper top.

We were upset again, as we did not find anything connected with the famous character in České Budějovice. But we went for walk on the central square, surrounded with buildings, visited a few shops, which sells products made of thin glass with unusual sputtering. And surely, we tried soup in the loaf of bread.

Time to go back to Prague. There was the city of Tábor, founded by Jan Žižka, the greatest of the Hussite leaders. It is known for Granátová skála (Garnet rock). It really has impregnations of garnet. Quite big ones. They were used for paving of local streets.

In the centre of the square is the statue of Jan Žižka. And the Town Hall in a late Gothic style.

We returned our hired car in Prague.

In Prague, walked in the centre, over The Charles Bridge, visited Prague Castle, looked at the shop windows with jewellery. We sat in the restaurant «Dobry vojak Svejk», played cards, eating Knödels.
